a girl’s guide to “mermaid” hair

Isn’t it true that during the summer our hair needs a little extra love and care? Coming from the girl with frizzy lion locks- I know I need all the help I can get. Everyone has their own routine, but I’d love to share mine to help girls struggling just like I am! It has taken me years to find the regimen that works perfectly for me, but I finally found it. Wanna know the secret?

1. Wash your hair every other day (with sulfate free shampoo that is!)

The oils that build up in your hair may make you squirm at the sight, but don’t fret! Those oils are what help to make your hair longer and healthier. Brushing through your hair each day breaks up the oils and allows them to cover each strand, strengthening the hair. What I did when I began this process was I’d wash my hair one night, wear it down the next day and then wear it up the day after to hide any excess oil. Fortunately for you, now we have some pretty awesome dry shampoo products, making washing your hair every other day easier than ever!

As for the sulfate free shampoo, I recommend the Organix brand. They sell it at any drug store, Target, etc. I’m so obsessed with their shampoo. I’ve been using it for over 2 years now. They have all kinds of mesmerizing scents- you’re bound to find one you fall in love with.

2. Take biotin supplements

Nothing makes the hair happier than strengthening from the inside out. In the one month I have been taking biotin supplements, my hair has gotten shinier, stronger, and softer. It is truly amazing how much a tiny little pill can change your beast of a mane. Also, biotin is known to advance hair growth, making it easier to achieve that “mermaid” length hair for the summer.

3. it’s a 10

Okay ladies, this is the kicker right here. The “its a 10” line is probably the most amazing product you could ever caress into your locks. I use the “miracle leave in plus keratin” formula and my hair is hydrated, silky, and it detangles easier than ever (especially with the help of the wet brush. seriously that thing is awesome too.) This stuff is on the pricier side but I promise its worth every single penny! Plus when you have this leave in conditioner, you can skip the conditioner in the shower. They say to avoid conditioner anyway because it weighs down the hair making you lose volume!

4. Skip the heat!

The summer sun is already harsh enough on your hair, using hot tools makes hair more dry and brittle. Use summer as your time to embrace messy hair and love the natural look that God gave you! If you do decide to use heat, make sure to prep your hair with a good heat protectant. CHI is always good, but if you want to stick to a more budget friendly alternative, I suggest TreSemme Thermal Creations.

This list could go on and on but these are a few of my favorite habits to get into during the summer. I wish you all luck on your mermaid adventures :)

With love, Samantha.
